Trail herds came through the area regularly and the settlers had a good working relationship with them. They had worked hard to prepare the only available crossing for the drovers to use. The promise to keep it open and in good shape had hit a snag when a tough outfit moved in and started collecting tolls.
They knew the cattle drovers wouldn’t stand for such nonsense. Something had to be done before a three-way war broke out.
A simple solution would be to move the toll takers out but that looked like a big job. The toll crew was ready, willing and able to fight and soon proved the point.
Hopefully the settlers could come up with a plan that would work without getting half of their people killed. Checking with several sources brought forth no workable method to accomplish the job so they asked Virg if he had any ideas. After all didn’t he usually have a bundle of schemes to solve problems.
Virg recruited his black friend, Zach Vaughn, to give him a hand in scouting out the situation. A plan was developed but it would lead to disaster if it didn’t work. There were some intricate details involved in the execution of the plan. Things would have to go like clockwork or a bunch of men would be in big trouble.
